Unexpected Mineral Seams is a colony event chain that has a very small chance to trigger 2 or 3 years after any colony has been founded. It can only happen once per game. Only empires with the Subterranean origin can complete the entire event chain. Getting the event chain is necessary to unlock the Unexpected Mineral Seams (14) Underlord achievement.

Unexpected Mineral Seams

Unexpected Mineral Seams (15)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (16)

Geological surveys on [colony name] have revealed that the planet is richer in minerals than we thought. After calibrating our sensors to penetrate deeper into the ground, we have discovered several promising mining sites. Should we direct additional resources to probing efforts, we might yet uncover deeper veins of useful ore.

Trigger conditions:
  • Not capital world

Deep Veins

Unexpected Mineral Seams (28)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (29)

Probing the underground of [colony name] is a tedious process: our scanners do not react well to the ground composition, and shifts in the geological layers mean that we have to recalibrate them every time. Still, we have discovered more exploitable veins of high quality ore. Their depths makes the logistics of the mining operation more complex than usual, but it will take more than that to stop us. There is no assurance that additional probing operations will lead us to more mineral veins.

Trigger conditions:
  • Unexpected Mineral Seams
  • Paid Energy
Mean time to happen:

Too Little, Too Deep

Unexpected Mineral Seams (37)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (38)

The latest prospecting efforts on [colony name] were inconclusive. Whatever minerals we could detect were buried too deep, in too small quantities, and through unstable ground. The projected costs of exploiting these veins would be higher than the profits. Despite this, our previous findings represents an enormous source of resources that should keep us busy for decades if not centuries.

Trigger conditions:
  • Deep Veins
  • Paid Energy
  • Not Subterranean origin
Mean time to happen:

Unexpected Mineral Seams (41) 120 days

Unexpected Mineral Seams (42)

Very well. Get to work.

More Ore

Unexpected Mineral Seams (46)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (47)

No matter how deep the minerals on [colony name] are hidden, we will find and extract them. It is what we do. Others might give up when confronted with unstable grounds, unfathomable depths or the logistics of maintining transport tunnels, but we do not. The underground is our home, and if we know where to look, it will provide. The lower we go, the higher the quality and quantity of the ore. Our latest samples even hinted at the presence of rare crystals deeper.

Trigger conditions:
  • Deep Veins
  • Paid Energy
  • Subterranean origin
Mean time to happen:

Unexpected Mineral Seams (50) 90 days

Unexpected Mineral Seams (51)

We found enough. Commence extration.

Fiery Crystals

Unexpected Mineral Seams (57)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (58)

A new depth has been reached by our surveying expeditions on [colony name]. As predicted, we are encountering clusters of crystals that shine in vivid hues of oranges, yellows, and reds when light passes through them. At times, it looks as if a brazier is illuminating the caves where we find them, casting shifting shadows on the walls. We also made a puzzling observation: it looks as if over the millenias, these crystals are slowly migrating towards the center of the planet. We are confident that there will be more to find if only we dig deeper towards the core.

Trigger conditions:
  • More Ore
  • Paid Energy
Mean time to happen:

Unexpected Mineral Seams (60) 90 days

Unexpected Mineral Seams (61)

These probing works are too expensive.

The Price of Greed

Unexpected Mineral Seams (67)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (68)

As our surveyors delved ever deeper to find ore on [colony name], more and more crystals littered their paths. Finally, they reached a gigantic cavern located close to the core of [colony name], and we lost communications. The last thing we know is that they were in the process of setting up lights and various sensors to study the cave. Then screams. Pain. Death. Destruction.

The cause was soon revealed when other geological surveyors detected multiple echoes tunneling at tremendous speed toward our colonies. Not long after, amid quakes and tremors, we were attacked by a crystalline entity of tremendous proportions. It is not unlike the spaceborne crystals, but seems to be highly aggressive, and capable of using the reconstructive capabilities of its kind to reshape its body in an instant.

While the core of the crystalline entity remain buried deep, it spawned tentacle-like appendages that dug through the groud looking to attack us or to absorb more crystals to grow. Projections are grim and we might be looking at the end of our colony on [colony name].

Trigger conditions:
  • Fiery Crystals

Unusual Happenings

Unexpected Mineral Seams (76)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (77)

Our mining operations on [colony name] have encountered unexpected difficulties. Ranging from mild tremors to shifting crystal veins, something is going on. Despite all our experience in tunnneling, we have no idea what it is. These circ*mstances make it hard to work in secure conditions, and we have already lost gear, lives and ore in unpredictable accidents and collapses. Perhaps it would be best to halt mining operations under a certain depth?

Trigger conditions:
  • Fiery Crystals
  • Did not pay Energy
Mean time to happen:

Crystalline Entity Defeated

Unexpected Mineral Seams (89)

Unexpected Mineral Seams (90)

After a grueling campaign, the crystalline entity dwelling at the heart of a planet has finally been defeated. The final battle took place deep underground, in the cave housing the core of the crystal behemoth, and only after we managed to shatter it did the beast stop fighting. Its various appendages disintegrated, losing cohesion at a molecular level and sprinkling crystal dust across the planet. The innumerable tunnels left in the wake of crystal tentacles are going to help us a lot in our efforts to mine the exceptionnally rich minerals composing this world. As for the origin of the entity itself, we are left with many questions, but we might have just gained some insight on the way that spacefaring crystalline entities are created.

Trigger conditions:
  • The Price of Greed
