Anne Arundel County schools to continue offering free meals over summer
With only a few weeks left in the school year, Anne Arundel County Public Schools is pledging to continue serving free meals to families over the summer.The feeding program was critical at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and district officials told 11 News they're committed to keeping it in place.This week, Anne Arundel County served its 9 millionth meal, and they expect to serve 1 million more by the end of the month.Cafeteria workers at Piney Orchard Elementary School in Odenton worked Friday afternoon to set up curbside service for families of school-aged children, and it's something they'll continue doing over the summer, starting on June 19, one day after the last day of classes."(People) most definitely expect it. I think it's just an extension of the school day, and then when the bell rings for the summer, we are going to be here for them all summer," said Jodi Risse, supervisor of the district's food and nutrition services.Anne Arundel County parents who have children 18 and under said showing up for meals has become a part of their daily and weekly routine."I think it's really great. We've come here on Fridays to pick up -- that's the day I work from home, I'm back in the office most days -- so it's nice to have, like, a nice midday (break) to come pick up so we have plenty of snacks for the weekend," said Brooke Riffe, a parent.The district is able to keep the free meals program running with help from the federal government and dedicated staff members who have been working around the clock since the start of the pandemic."I love what I do. I love the kids here, I love the staff.
