Powerball is one of Pennsylvania's favorite games - the multimillion-dollar jackpot has made it famous worldwide, and there are a total of nine prize levels, including a $1 million second prize. Powerball is played in 48 U.S. jurisdictions, and by international players online.
Pick up a ticket for $2 to enter the drawing held every Wednesday and Sunday night at 10:59 pm ET in Tallahassee, Florida. In Pennsylvania, sales end at 9:59 pm on draw nights so you'll need to get your ticket before then.
The starting jackpot and increases between draws are based on ticket sales and are announced before each draw.

How to Play
Powerball costs $2 per play, and you can play up to five times per playslip. Pick five main numbers from 1 to 69, and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. Or keep it simple by checking the Quick Pick box and the lottery computer will randomly select all the numbers for you.
If you want to play the same numbers more than once, save yourself extra trips to the store - just select the number of future games you want to enter, up to 26 consecutive draws. The cost of your play will increase accordingly.
Add Power Play for an extra $1 per play to multiply the value of any non-jackpot prizes. Power Play increases any prizes below the jackpot 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times. The only exception is the $1 million Match 5 second prize, which Power Play will always double to $2 million.
During each Powerball draw, a Power Play number is also drawn. When the jackpot is $150 million or below, a Power Play number of 10 can be drawn, increasing non-jackpot wins by 10 times. For example, that means that a $50,000 third prize is worth $500,000! When the top prize is above $150 million, the Power Play number is 2-5.

Match all six numbers drawn by the lottery to win the jackpot - you must match all five main balls plus the red Powerball. There are also eight other prizes from $4 up to $1 million to be won!
Jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize payout as an annuity or cash lump sum. Here's what that means ...
The annuity is the full advertised prize value and is paid as 30 instalments over 29 years (the winner gets one payment right away). Each payment is 5 percent bigger than the last. The advertised jackpot is based on the money in the prize pool being invested over the annuity period.
The majority of top prize winners take the cash option - a single payout of the money in the prize pool at the time of the draw. That means it's lower than the advertised jackpot.

Power Play Prize Multiplier
See how much more you could win with the Power Play add-on for an extra $1 per play. During each Powerball draw, a separate Power Play number is randomly chosen and non-jackpot prizes are multiplied by that number.
Power Play increases wins below the jackpot by up to 10 times if the jackpot is $150 million or less, and up to five times if the jackpot is over $150 million. Note that Power Play always doubles the Match 5 second prize from $1 million to $2 million no matter which Power Play number is drawn.

How to Claim Prizes
Awesome! You've won a Powerball prize! Just complete a few simple steps and you'll be able to collect your payout.
Don't forget to sign the back of that precious winning ticket and store it in a safe location. Next, be aware that prizes expire one year from the winning draw date, so don't wait too long to redeem your ticket.
All prizes below the jackpot can be claimed by mailing your signed ticket to the lottery, and you've won over $600, you'll need to fill out a claim form and submit that too. The lottery will mail your check within 4-6 weeks.
A lottery retailer may be able to pay out prizes up to $2,500.
If you're an incredibly lucky jackpot winner, you'll need to schedule an appointment at Pennsylvania Lottery headquarters in Middletown to receive your check.
Rules
You must be at least 18 years old to buy a Powerball ticket or redeem a prize.
Lottery wins are taxable income. For amounts of $600 and above, the lottery will provide a form W-2G to send to the IRS. For prizes above $5,000, the lottery will withhold the minimum amount of applicable taxes before the prize is paid out: 25 percent federal taxes and 3.07 percent state taxes.
History
Since its launch in 1992, Powerball has been the focus of dreams of becoming an overnight millionaire, and has contributed almost $22 billion to good causes across the participating jurisdictions. 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands sell Powerball tickets. And when you buy a ticket, over half the proceeds stay in the local jurisdiction.
The largest-ever Powerball prize was a $2.04 billion jackpot won on November 7, 2022. The world record was won by a single ticket from California. The cash lump sum on offer for this draw was a staggering $997.6 million.
The Pennsylvania Lottery introduced Powerball ticket sales on June 27, 2002 and the first drawing for PA players was June 29.
Less than three months later, on September 14, 2002, the first Pennsylvania player hit the jackpot, sharing the prize with a winner in Indiana. Earl Varley of Hatfield, Montgomery County, PA chose the $30.8 million cash option.
The biggest jackpot win by a single ticket in the history of the Pennsylvania Lottery happened on May 8, 2004. The lucky winners, Steven and Kristine White of Skillman, New Jersey, opted for a cash payout and took home $110.2 million.
Mississippi was the most recent state to join Powerball and began ticket sales on January 30, 2020. Residents welcomed the new game, lining up before sunrise for their chance to hit it big on the iconic lottery.
