1 QGIS: An open-source alternative

QGIS is a free and open-source software that runs on various operating systems, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. It has a large and active community of users and developers who contribute to its features, plugins, documentation, and support. QGIS offers a wide range of functionality, such as vector and raster analysis, geoprocessing, geocoding, georeferencing, web mapping, and 3D visualization. QGIS also supports many data formats and standards, such as Shapefile, GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, WMS, WFS, and PostGIS.

2 ArcGIS: A powerful and professional platform

ArcGIS is a proprietary and commercial software that is developed by Esri, a leading company in the GIS industry. It is available in different versions and licenses, such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS provides a comprehensive and integrated platform for advanced spatial analysis, modeling, mapping, and collaboration. ArcGIS also has a rich ecosystem of applications, extensions, online services, and resources, such as ArcGIS StoryMaps, ArcGIS Insights, ArcGIS Living Atlas, and Esri Academy.

3 Functionality: A trade-off between flexibility and complexity

Both QGIS and ArcGIS offer a high level of functionality for various GIS tasks and projects. However, there are some trade-offs between flexibility and complexity. QGIS is more flexible and customizable, as it allows you to install and use various plugins, scripts, and tools from different sources. You can also modify the source code and create your own extensions if you have the skills and time. However, this also means that QGIS can be less stable, consistent, and compatible, as some plugins and tools may not work well with each other or with different versions of QGIS. ArcGIS is more complex and professional, as it has more built-in features, options, and standards. You can also access and use many specialized applications and services from Esri and its partners. However, this also means that ArcGIS can be less flexible and customizable, as it requires more licensing, installation, and configuration. You may also have less control over the data formats, styles, and workflows.

4 Usability: A matter of preference and experience

Both QGIS and ArcGIS have user-friendly and intuitive interfaces that allow you to perform various GIS operations and tasks. However, there are some differences in the design, layout, and interaction of these interfaces. QGIS has a more modular and customizable interface, as you can add or remove toolbars, panels, menus, and windows according to your preferences and needs. You can also change the appearance, language, and theme of QGIS. ArcGIS has a more structured and standardized interface, as it has predefined toolsets, ribbons, tabs, and dialogs that guide you through the GIS processes and workflows. You can also access and use many online help and tutorials from Esri. The usability of QGIS and ArcGIS may depend on your personal preference and experience. Some users may find QGIS more convenient and adaptable, while others may find ArcGIS more efficient and consistent.

5 Compatibility: A challenge for data exchange and integration

Both QGIS and ArcGIS can handle and process many data formats and standards, such as Shapefile, GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, WMS, WFS, and PostGIS. However, there are some challenges and limitations for data exchange and integration between these two software. QGIS can read and write most of the data formats that ArcGIS can, but not vice versa. For example, QGIS can open and edit the native ArcGIS format of File Geodatabase, but ArcGIS cannot open or edit the native QGIS format of QGIS Project File. Moreover, some data formats may lose some attributes, metadata, or quality when converted or exported from one software to another. For example, some symbology, labels, or styles may not be preserved or displayed correctly when transferring data from QGIS to ArcGIS or vice versa. Therefore, it is important to check and verify the data compatibility and quality before and after data exchange and integration.

6 Choice: A balance between cost and benefit

Both QGIS and ArcGIS have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of functionality and usability. Therefore, the choice of the best software for your needs may depend on a balance between cost and benefit. QGIS is more affordable and accessible, as it is free and open-source. You can download and use it without any license or subscription fees. You can also customize and extend it according to your requirements and preferences. However, QGIS may also require more time and effort to learn and maintain, as it is less stable, consistent, and compatible. You may also encounter some bugs, errors, or limitations that affect your performance or results. ArcGIS is more expensive and exclusive, as it is proprietary and commercial. You need to pay for the license or subscription fees to use it. You also need to follow the rules and regulations of Esri and its partners. However, ArcGIS may also provide more quality and reliability, as it is more complex, professional, and integrated. You may also benefit from the support and resources of Esri and its community.

In my experience QGIS is just as stable if not more stable then ArcMap, also slightly more responsive. ArcMap is proprietary and limits access due to subscriptions, limiting companies ability to give access to all employees. Qgis is also very powerful for being free. In my opinion, ArcMaps and its subscription days are limited.
